This is an apocalypse/dystopian YA. There are certainly no lack of these running around the world right now, but this is a pretty good one. It has a lot of action, sometimes there is so much action that it is difficult to follow. The author really likes ending chapters with cliff-hangers and forecasts of doom, but it keeps you reading. Alex is a strong, female heroine. But again, I feel like there are quite a few of them running around the dystopian worlds as well. I'm giving it 4 stars because I liked the survivalist aspects of this book. The characters are in the forest when the book starts and they have to live in the woods for a while. This felt like a throw back to other books I liked in my childhood like Hachet by Gary Paulsen, but with weird pseudo-zombies. I liked it and I was psyched for book 2, sadly I was disappointed almost immediately with it...
