I can see why this one won a RITA award. Reggie and Alyce are some of the most layered characters in a romance I've read recently. I found Reggie very realistic in his struggles with alcoholism and reforming. Alyce was a slightly less deep character but only because we've read the beautiful-woman-who-thinks-she's-ugly many times before. Fortunately there is more to Alyce than that. I particularly enjoyed that she worked, in a man's profession and was good at it. And she wasn't working pretending to be a man, she asserted herself as a competent manager and a woman. There's not a lot more to say-- the story flows along nicely. If you like regency romance and with excellent characterization this one is for you.
