This is a very, very good book. I give it four stars because it took a while to hook me. The beginning description of how Maddie and Julie meet was a little bit slow for me. I read in the author's note at the end that she intended to write a book about female pilots in WWII, which she has done. The beginning does give a lot of information about flying in war in Britain in WWII. That being said, women flying planes is just the setting for the wonderful story that Wein tells in this book. It is a great and sad story about friendship and war. She has also done a brilliant job using an unreliable narrator. The narration switches mid story to really bring the whole thing together in a very poignant and moving way.
